Eleven Things I Hate about me (and other irrelevant nonsense)

Here are some incredibly unimportant things that often make it hard, oh-so-hard to be in my head:

  1. I can NEVER find anything in my handbag. Unless I tip the whole damn thing out and this is NOT fun when it’s 10pm and dark outside and you can’t find your car keys.
  2. I can’t do sums in my head. At all. Especially when the number 7 is involved.
  3. I can’t do the same thing every day, or even two days in a row, in the same order. This is very annoying when you’re trying to acquire a (good) new habit. Or get anything done.
  4. I don’t menu plan. I can’t. I won’t. I must.
  5. My ability to meditate seems to depend on the cycles of the moon. Or the planets. Or what I ate for dinner.
  6. I don’t like parties. That’s it. I’m sorry, but I just don’t. You can’t have a real conversation, it’s noisy and I can’t hear properly because my ability to distinguish background noise from foreground noise is diminishing as I age. Maybe I just hate that.
  7. There is NO SPORT IN THE WORLD that I understand the rules of (or like). Especially not cricket. This is very hard in Australia where sport defines us as a nation and it’s what we live and breathe.
  8. It takes me roughly a gazillion times longer than almost anyone to learn anything to do with technology. This is very hard on planet Earth where technology defines us as a species and it’s what we live and breathe.
  9. I don’t get Twitter. I wish I did cos I think it may not be as lame as it seems.
  10. My mind is like a runaway crazy horse. It leaps ahead, and then forgets where it’s going and why. So on the one hand, I get to traverse vast distances in a day. On the other hand, I’m often not sure where I am when I get there. This is so bad that I had to have several goes at compiling this list because I kept forgetting the next thing I hate. But on the plus side, I did an enormous number of other things in between.
  11. I can’t remember the 11th thing. I had it – just a second ago. Now it’s gone. Oh wait … no. (true story)

Can you relate? Anything about you that you hate?  🙂

Oh thank you Kelly 🙂 I thought it was time for a break from the deep and meaningful to the shallow and meaningless! Btw I find it hard to believe that you can relate to any of the above – I have you up so high on a pedestal that I mostly can’t see you at all!

    2. Malini – I could have written this list myself… All except number 8. I’d probably just add in that I always seem to lack motivation when I have time and have plenty of motivation when I have none. All I have to say in response is this – you find all these ‘faults’ in yourself and yet you’re still a creative, inspiring, and generally wonderful person. So maybe you lack the qualities you wish you had because otherwise you’d just be way to awesome. <3

awww you’re sweet, Daley 🙂 I’m so surprised that this post has resonated with so many people, I had no idea we all hated so many of the same things in ourselves!! And I think the world of you (and you’re fantastic computer skills!)

Actually I think he finds nos 1,2,6,7,8 VERY trying! But he’s survived it for over 25 years with me, so I’m sure I’ll continue to provide ‘growth’ experiences for him for years to come 🙂

  1. Hi Malini! I was laughing a loud in the middle of the night!
All 11 are in harmony of making the True Beautiful Artist as yourself 🙂

Hey Neesy, you’re up there on my pedestal and I bet you can’t relate to ANY of those things, but I hope it gave you a laugh 🙂 Now you know how hard it is for some of us!!

      1. Why thank you kind lady! I certainly can relate to some of the things. Twitter and sport? My brain either does not care or switches off when either is mentioned! I also have come to the conclusion I don’t like loud gatherings be it a party, a bar a restuarant. I want to be able to enjoy the company of my friends and family not compete to be heard. xxxx

      2. My computer just ate my reply! So sorry if you get this twice. Thanks for the pedastal place, not sure I am worthy but striving to be better each day. I certainly can relate to the above, sort and twitter!? I just don’t see the point! Also in agreement about parties or anywhere I have to compete to be heard! xxxx

I got both responses – it was so nice to see your name pop up twice in my inbox! Good to know that I have some things in common with the Most Organised Person I Know 🙂
          love xxx

  2. Gorgeous. I am with you on every one except the handbag. I searched for ages for one with lots of pockets and it is all very organised.

This blog was so good to read, so much fun and so beautifully written.

Hello Lynne, thank you! Nice to know we have so much in common! I thought I was mostly alone in this! ‘The Handbag Thing’ has been driving me crazy 🙂 I did get one with perfect pockets but I can’t remember which thing I put in which pocket!! Any tips? Or do I have to just accept the fact the the synapses just aren’t firing as they used to ? 🙂

Hi Marianne, I’m so relieved! I thought that I was weird and alone in most of this stuff but now I find that I have a few ‘friends’ out there 🙂

  4. Oh My Goodness Me
You have just described me exactly- your like my twin.
Thank goodness I don’t feel abnormal and alone any more ……there are others
    Lets celebrate our craziness xx

Hi Claire – that’s so weird! I REALLY really thought I was alone in most of this stuff! Yay! I have a twin 🙂

  5. From what I’ve heard the not being able to find keys is just a universal woman thing. I mean all men have to do is pull them out of their pockets, but we have this whole universe within out bags for endless amounts of stuff to get swallowed up in…

The thing is I have POCKETS in my bag for specific things. Why oh why do I still lose my keys in the damn bag??? (by the way, I found my lost keys in my jeans, after dad turned the house upside down looking for them! Don’t tell anyone 🙂

  6. Is it the artist in us? Is it the age? Is it being a woman? I cant be sure, but No 11 is racing to the supermarket to get one (1) thing for the pantry and spending $ 92 and coming home and needing to go back to get one (1) thing for the pantry!

I think that’s a pretty universal thing 🙂 It’s how supermarkets make money!! You go in for one thing and come out with a hundred other things cos they aim to distract, distract, distract so that you buy, buy, buy !! (and forget, so you come back for more!)

  7. Hi Malina,

Yep I can relate to all of them but like Greg, George is very tolerant & after well over 30 yrs of marriage it only gets better even the quirky things…keep them up I reckon

Debbi Wilson…George & I did a one day art course that daughter Stephanie sent from New York if you remember & WE LOVED IT…still rave about it & YES will be bringing girlfriends next time Malina..X

Hello Debbi, I remember you both VERY well!!
It’s amazing how many people relate to the things that I hate in myself. We’re lucky we have tolerant husbands, but they’re lucky too cos we’re pretty nice!
Would love to have you both back – you were SO much fun 🙂
      xx

  8. Hey Malini, I find that most of your problems are mine as well; can do small mental sums but have a hubby of over 50 years who thinks it is still fun to have a ‘race’ with it! NEVER menu plan – I don’t cook if I can get away with it!! What on earth is this ‘Twitter’? And have to ‘follow’ sport as go to granson’s football games (but only for another few months – thank goodness!)
The mind (mine) – according the all-knowledgeable one in our house – only functions when it’s doing mundane things like data entry!
Oh well – I’ll get there one day – oh yeah!!

I would LOVE to have someone cook for me every day… aaaah…. and if I could find my calculator, it would get a LOT more use!

  9. Hi Mal!!! Bahahaha hilarious!!- I love every single one of these funny things about you and believe me, you are certainly not alone in many of them- we are all frighteningly hopeless at things other people seem to be great at– Love what dad said as there are lots of things we love about you- Amen to what Mary said. I just have to say how I admire your ability to just cook something from what’s in the kitchen- I have no choice but to be organized because I have no creativity in meal cooking and have to follow an exact recipe or it all goes wrong- very wrong. Plus i dont enjoy cooking because the time you must stay constantly stirring whatever it is is the exact time one kid starts fighting the other kid/ or kid needs help in toilet/ or various other child based scenarios… Oh and if number 11 was a spatial/directions thing I am SO there with you…Love from your adoring stepdaughter 😉

Hey, I love your username!! Thanks for nice comments, lovely stepdaughter! the thing with cooking for me is so weird. I know I’m a good cook – WHY or why don’t I enjoy it, plan for it and be organised with it??!! I think no. 11 was to do with directions…but it may have been something else!

  10. HI Malini… yep, yep, yep….. and yep….. can relate! It is amazing what we think we can or can’t do or why we do or don’t do things when we sit down and think about it. I think now that if hubby and I weren’t thinking about building a house last year I would not have decided to “google” abstract art courses! Well here I am nearly 1 year out and sold my first 2 paintings and one off to Canada! LOL…. all to thinking….mmmm I would like to try painting abstract art……..and it is all thanks Malini!….. woo hoo!!!

oh Maria, you are SUCH a treasure! I’m so, SO happy that you talked to Mr Google when you did, and that you came along to my workshop 🙂 You are amazing – you’ve sold work and overseas as well!! Inspirational!!

Oh, me too!! I have such a huge book addiction that I can barely get through all the books I acquire! But I don’t hate this, I love my books, and I don’t care if I don’t finish them…they’re my friends… they are, they are…

  13. Thanks for leaving a comment on my page + reading my post. I did laugh at some of these points, Malini! 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 10 – uh. Yep! Totally relate. I do.not.get Twitter, either. I know it’s supposedly a smart thing to ‘do,” but I’m happy with FB and a blog and Pinterest. And email.

I NEVER find anything in my handbag + it’s always super heavy.

Your post really made me laugh. 🙂

It’s great taking the course with you + I’m happy we’ve connected. 🙂

Hi Becky, so happy you got a laugh out of this 🙂 I make myself crazy with these things at times, but I must say that since I made them public, they seem to have lost their sting a bit!! Especially as so many others can relate too. I’m very glad we’ve connected too! x

  14. You MUST try menu planning!!! I have been doing it since I was pregnant with my second child 16 years ago now – and it has probably saved my sanity! (can you tell I’m a bit of an orderly person? I can’t wait to have a go at CREATIVITY in your class in November!) 🙂

  15. so funny I was thinking it must be a sister thing… the lots that we had in common ( except I don’t hate parties or menu planning if I have to use it for a party…

so funny how half the world had so many points in common with you!!!

you are so clever the way you got all our attention with the title and image!!!

wish I had some more of your good points in common.. !!!
